SAT
Undergraduate admission test for universities in the US and many other countries; also accepted with scholarships by several Indian private universities (e.g. Ashoka, Shiv Nadar, FLAME) via India Global Higher Ed Alliance.
Eligibility
There are no eligibility criteria, age limits or attempt limits — students typically sit it in Class 11 or 12. Registration is entirely online through a College Board account, and a valid photo ID (passport recommended in India) is required on test day. Fee waivers are available only to US test-takers, so Indian students pay the full international fee.

Exam pattern
Fully digital, taken on the Bluebook app at authorised centres — there is no paper option in India. Total time is 2 hours 14 minutes: Reading and Writing (two 32-minute modules, 54 questions) followed by Maths (two 35-minute modules, 44 questions), with a 10-minute break between sections. The test is module-adaptive: your first-module performance decides whether the second module is harder (required for top scores) or easier. Nearly all questions are multiple-choice, the built-in Desmos graphing calculator is allowed throughout Maths, and there is no negative marking. Scored 400-1600 (200-800 per section); results arrive in about two weeks.
Syllabus at a glance
Reading and Writing uses many short passages, each with one question, testing vocabulary in context, evidence, inference, grammar and rhetorical skills. Maths covers algebra, advanced maths (quadratics, functions), problem-solving and data analysis, and basic geometry and trigonometry — roughly Class 10 CBSE level with word-problem framing.

How toppers play it
- Module 1 decides everything: only a strong first module routes you to the harder second module, without which scores above roughly 600 per section are impossible.
- Master Desmos — plotting equations often solves system, quadratic and inequality questions faster than algebra, and it is available for the entire Maths section.
- No negative marking and full flag-and-return within a module: answer everything, and sweep flagged questions before the module timer ends.
- Book your Indian centre 8-10 weeks early for October-December dates; they fill long before the official deadline.
- Treat the Bluebook adaptive mocks as your only true score gauge, and drill short-passage vocabulary-in-context questions — they are the highest-frequency Reading and Writing type.
