GPAT
National entrance for admission to M.Pharm programmes at AICTE-approved institutions; GPAT-qualified students in approved M.Pharm courses receive the AICTE monthly stipend, and scores are also weighed by some pharma recruiters and PhD programmes.
Eligibility
Indian nationals holding a four-year B.Pharm degree, or in the final year with results due in the admission year, are eligible; B.Tech (Pharmaceutical and Fine Chemical Technology) holders are not. There is no age limit and no limit on attempts. The GPAT score is valid for three years from the date of result declaration.

Exam pattern
Computer-based test of 3 hours with 125 multiple-choice questions carrying 500 marks. Each correct answer earns 4 marks and each wrong answer deducts 1 mark (25% negative marking); there is a single paper with no sectional division or sectional cutoffs. The test is held in one shift on a single day at NBEMS centres across the country, and merit is issued as an all-India rank with tie-breaking rules published in the information bulletin.
Syllabus at a glance
The paper spans the full four-year B.Pharm curriculum: pharmaceutics (including physical pharmacy, biopharmaceutics and industrial pharmacy), pharmacology, pharmaceutical chemistry (organic, inorganic and medicinal), pharmacognosy, pharmaceutical analysis, and allied areas such as biochemistry, microbiology, jurisprudence, clinical pharmacy and dispensing. Pharmacology, pharmaceutics and pharmaceutical chemistry historically carry the heaviest weightage.

How toppers play it
- With 180 minutes for 125 questions, time is not the constraint — accuracy is; the -1 penalty means blind guessing can sink a rank when only about 10% qualify.
- Weight your revision by historical marks distribution: pharmacology, pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmacognosy together account for the bulk of the paper.
- Memorise high-yield facts systematically — drug classifications, mechanisms, chemical structures of official drugs, and pharmacopoeial standards recur every year.
- Solve the NTA-era and NBEMS previous papers under timed conditions and review the official answer keys, which flag the exact framing GPAT prefers.
- Track the NBEMS website directly for the bulletin — the application window since the NBEMS takeover has been short (about a month) and dates have shifted from the old NTA calendar.
